What is JNVST?
JNVST is the annual entrance exam conducted by NVS (Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti) for admission to Class 6 in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across India. It is a fully-funded residential school system for talented rural children.
Exam pattern at a glance
- Mode: Pen-and-paper (OMR).
- Duration: 2 hours (extended to 2.5 hours for Divyang candidates).
- Total questions: 80 objective questions, 100 marks.
- Sections: Mental Ability (40 Q / 50 marks), Arithmetic (20 Q / 25 marks), Language (20 Q / 25 marks).
- No negative marking.
A 6-month preparation plan
Month 1 – 2: Build the base
- Finish Class 4 and 5 NCERT Mathematics thoroughly.
- Read 1 short passage daily in the language you will attempt (Hindi/English) and answer comprehension.
- Solve 10 mental-ability puzzles daily (analogy, series, pattern completion).
Month 3 – 4: Topic-wise mastery
- Arithmetic: Number system, fractions, decimals, percentage, profit/loss, time & work, speed, area, volume.
- Mental ability: Odd-one-out, mirror image, embedded figures, geometric figure completion, punched hole/paper folding.
- Language: Passage-based comprehension only — no grammar theory needed.
Month 5: Speed practice
Attempt 3 full-length JNVST mocks per week. Target: 60+ correct in 2 hours.
Month 6: Revision + mental prep
Revise weak topics. Sleep 8 hours. Practise filling OMR sheets correctly under a timer.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Neglecting the mental-ability section — it carries 50% of the marks.
- Skipping OMR practice and losing marks to bubbling errors.
- Studying from a Class 6 or higher book — JNVST is entirely based on Class 5 level.
